Kicking the tires: Cheapflights.com, a website specializing in-you guessed it-cheap flights, says Baton Rouge is the place where Americans want to be in October. Searches for flights to Baton Rouge on the site are up 119% for October dates, compared to searches for September travel. That puts it No. 1 on the website’s list of the “Top 10 In-Demand October Getaways.” “The SEC home opener rolls around in mid-October; surely fans from near and far are planning their pilgrimage,” the website speculates. “However, there is more to October than football in Baton Rouge. The city also hosts one of the most acclaimed Halloween attractions: The 13th Gate.” Check out the full list here.

Throwing sparks: Entergy has awarded a $460,000 grant to New Schools for Baton Rouge, a nonprofit organization created earlier this year to support the development of charter schools by raising money from public and private sources to invest in them. Working within north Baton Rouge’s newly created Achievement Zone, where Entergy says 65% of students are currently performing below grade level, NSBR hopes to improve student achievement at up to 25 charter schools. The grant is among $1.2 million Entergy is giving to 50 nonprofit groups through its foundation. Read more about New Schools for Baton Rouge from Daily Report here.

Earning their spot: Online voters have helped Walk-On’s Bistreaux & Bar in New Orleans advance to the final round in ESPN Mobile’s Best Sports Bar in North America contest. Walk-On’s is up for the title against Buffalo Blues of Pittsburgh; Hickory Tavern of Charlotte; Pluckers of Austin; and Taco Mac of Atlanta.
