On the ascent: The International Air Transport Association says passenger demand grew 5.9% last year but lagged behind capacity increases. The group, which represents some 240 major airlines, says the airlines increased their available seats by 6.3%, meaning average loads declined slightly in 2011. The cargo market, however, contracted 0.7% last year. The group says the weak euro boosted business travel, as passengers from elsewhere took advantage of cheaper fares. It also notes travel to and from Japan was badly affected by the earthquake, with demand down more than 15%.

Digital evolution: Call it the “second-screen” Super Bowl. About two-thirds of smartphone and tablet owners use their gadgets to do things like text or post while watching TV, according to research firm Nielsen. So, for Sunday’s big game, companies from Coke to Chevrolet are trying to reach fans on all the “second screens” they have, via smartphone apps, Facebook promotions and ads in movie theaters before the game.
