Stacked: Gov. Bobby Jindal spent more than $1.3 million on advertising over the last month, even though he faces no major competition in his bid for re-election. His latest campaign finance reports show more than $6 million remaining in his campaign account in the lead-up to the Oct. 22 election. He spent $1.9 million from Sept. 13 through Oct. 2, more than two-thirds of that on TV and online advertising. Nine opponents are running against Jindal, but none have the fundraising heft or statewide name-recognition to mount a significant challenge to the Republican governor, who is seeking a second term.
La Isla Grande: Officials at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport say the airport has received approval for direct flight service to Cuba. Travel to Cuba will still be highly restricted. Passengers must have close relatives in Cuba or must be involved in the medical or agricultural business sectors. The Cuban government also will be allowing travel for education and religious activities. The U.S. government gave approval for the flights in March. The latest action involves Cuba’s consent to allow nonstop flights from New Orleans to land. But the service is far from being started. Airport spokeswoman Michelle Wilcut says the airport will need either an airline or an approved charter operator to make the flights.
