Going up: Mayor Kip Holden will give remarks today at an 11 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony on the 438 Main St. mixed-income residential development downtown. The $4.7 million project includes 22 one- and two-bedroom apartments, with rents ranging for $300 to $1,100, depending on renters’ income. The development is a public/private partnership with the Louisiana Office of Community Development, 438 Main St. LLC and Liberty Bank & Trust. 438 Main St. LLC is owned by Kevin and Helena Cunningham, Norman Chenevert of Chenevert Architects, and Liberty Bank & Trust.
And the award goes to: The Southern University System has received nominations in eight categories for the 2012 HBCU Awards. Finalists in 27 categories have been announced for the second installment of the national award ceremony recognizing Historically Black College and University achievement. The HBCU Awards ceremony will be held April 20 on the campus of Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland. Southern University submitted nominees for awards in nine categories. Nominations received include: Professor Stephen McGuire, College of Sciences in Baton Rouge, up for Male Faculty Member of the Year; Associate Professor Karen Crosby, College of Engineering in Baton Rouge, up for Female Faculty Member of the Year; SU Marching Band “Human Jukebox” in Baton Rouge, up for Best Band; School of Nursing in Baton Rouge, up for Best Nursing Program; Dennis S. Brown, president of the SU Alumni Federation, up for Male Alumnus of the Year; SU School of Social Work in New Orleans, up for Best Social Work Program; SU Law Center, up for HBCU of the Year; and Ja’el Gordon, president of the Association for Women Students in Baton Rouge, up for Female Student of the Year.
