LSU’s Les Miles is the Associated Press college football coach of the year after guiding the top-ranked Tigers to a spot in the BCS championship game. Miles received 30 votes from AP poll voters, beating out Kansas State’s Bill Snyder (16), Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy (6), Michigan’s Brady Hoke (3) and Southern California’s Lane Kiffin (1). Miles led the Tigers (13-0) through numerous off-field distractions to become the only unbeaten team in the Football Bowl Subdivision. LSU matched a school record for victories, including wins over three teams then ranked in the top three and five against teams then ranked in the top 25, and can break the record with a victory over Alabama in the Jan. 9 title game in New Orleans. Miles won the award, which has been given annually since 1998, for the first time. He’s the second LSU coach to receive the honor, joining Alabama coach Nick Saban, who won it with the Tigers in 2003.
