NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Louisiana Supreme Court has postponed the implementation of new restrictions on the content of lawyers’ advertising.
Chief Justice Catherine Kimball announced Wednesday that the rules will take effect on Oct. 1 instead of April 1.
The new restrictions originally were scheduled to be implemented on Dec. 1, 2008.
Kimball says the court needs more time to study some of the rules in the wake of lawsuits that claim they are unconstitutional.
Public Citizen Inc., a national consumer advocacy group, joined two personal-injury attorneys in suing over the new rules.
The new rules prevent lawyers from promising “results” or referring to “past successes” and bar them from using nicknames or mottos that imply an ability to get results. Some plaintiffs lawyers also claim the rules impose a broad ban on the use of client testimonials, actors’ endorsements and re-enactments.
