Scott Angelle’s appointment as head of a federal regulatory post in the Trump administration leaves vacant positions on several state boards that will now have to be filled.
As The Advertiser reports, Gov. John Bel Edwards will likely appoint an interim member to the Louisiana Public Service Commission in the next few days to replace Angelle, the District 2 representative.
Angelle formally resigned from the board on Tuesday. He has been chosen to be director the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which provides regulatory oversight of oil and gas operations on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf.
Edwards’ spokesman Richard Carbo says the governor has five weeks to call a special election for the position, which represents voters in all or part of East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberia, Iberville, Lafayette, Lafourche, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Martin, St. Mary, Terrebonne, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana.
The likely election dates are Oct. 14 for the primary and Nov. 18 for the runoff, Carbo says.
Meanwhile, he says Edwards will consider short-term appointments to the PSC from District 2 who would serve until the fall elections.
Angelle also resigned from his highly coveted position on the LSU Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, university spokesman Ernie Ballard confirms. Edwards also will have appoint someone to serve the remainder of Angelle’s term, which was to end June 1, 2018.
