Initial claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana dropped in the week ending March 21, but were still sharply higher than in the comparable period a year ago, the Louisiana Workforce Commission reported today. For the week, there were 4,414 new claims, down from the previous week’s 4,526.
In the year-ago week, 1,862 new claims were filed. Last week also showed an increase in continuing claims with 42,887, compared with 41,230 the previous week and 20,759 a year ago. The largest increases in continuing claims were in wood products manufacturing and construction, the agency says.
