Continued legislative changes targeting health care has been a challenge, the head of The NeuroMedical Center says in Business Report’s new Executive Spotlight from its latest issue.

“Physicians face scrutiny by the government on many levels and are often hindered in their business plans,” NeuroMedical Center CEO Nancy Kelly says. “This creates a level of cost and often missed opportunity that other industries may not see.”

Kelly has been at the forefront of the center’s administration since almost the beginning in 1985. She has guided the center as it has grown from a fledgling three-man group practice located near Baton Rouge General Mid City in the late ’70s to a multidisciplinary team operating from the curved high-rise at the edge of Perkins Rowe today.

“There are not many neuroscience practices such as ours outside of an academic setting,” Kelly says. “We cover the full spectrum of neurological care.”

Around the time Kelly started her career there, the center’s founder, Dr. Thomas Flynn, rebranded his practice to The NeuroMedical Center, which now includes the The Spine Hospital of Louisiana, The Rehabilitation Hospital and The Clinic.

The NeuroMedical Center has since evolved into a multidisciplinary, comprehensive center caring for all aspects of the neurosciences.

“We have the clinic with 30 physicians and seven satellite locations,” Kelly says.

The NeuroMedical Center is not like some of Baton Rouge’s health care institutions that are changing their business models to manage chronic conditions to keep patients out of hospitals.

“Unfortunately, most of what we treat neurologically is not really preventative. We deal with serious trauma and/or diseases that most of the time cannot be prevented,” Kelly says.

Instead, the center is focused on recruiting more physicians in the short term. For the long term, she says the center is striving to meet the neurological needs of this community.

How have you separated The NeuroMedical Center from other similar facilities?

The NeuroMedical Center is actually quite unique. There are not many neuroscience practices such as ours outside of an academic setting. We cover the full spectrum of neurological care from the clinic setting, to the hospital setting, to the rehab setting. We have organized a group of sub-specialized, board-certified experts in almost every aspect of the neurosciences.
