Netflix will separate its DVD-by-mail service and streaming video businesses, CEO Reed Hastings announced late Sunday in a blog posting. Netflix has been under scrutiny since July, when it announced it was raising prices and separating its DVD and streaming services into two separate payment plans. Netflix previously bundled both options into a single package. The DVD service will be called Qwikster, while the streaming business will retain the Netflix name. For the most part, the DVD service will remain the same. “Just a new name,” Hastings says, adding customers will see an upgrade option for video game rentals on the Qwikster website. Hastings says the company will add “substantial” streaming content in the next few months without changing pricing.
