According to final enrollment data released by the Louisiana Department of Education today, 4,944 students enrolled in the private school voucher program the state calls the Louisiana Scholarship Program for the 2012-13 school year. Enrollment numbers show 14% of students came from public schools graded “C” by the state, 69% from “D” schools and 17% from “F” schools. The program includes 118 schools, with one traditional public school joining 117 non-public schools. Most vouchers—79%—were awarded to elementary school students. Enrollment in Louisiana exceeded enrollment in states that have similar programs, including Ohio and Indiana, with much larger populations, the department says.
