An analysis released last week by the nonpartisan policy group Alliance for Excellent Education praises Louisiana’s new education plan as “one of the most promising in the United States,” The American Press reports.

Louisiana created its plan in accordance with the Every Student Succeeds Act, which requires states to submit a plan to the U.S. Department of Education explaining how they will reach their education goals.

“The state’s use of a ‘strength of diploma’ indicator to make the high school experience more rigorous and meaningful for all students was especially innovative,” says Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia. “I hope that other states follow its lead.”

Louisiana’s plan received a “green light” on 11 of the 13 indicators the alliance tracks, Wise says.

Education Superintendent John White calls the result of the analysis encouraging.

“We look forward to the federal review and other feedback we will receive in the weeks to come, and to using that feedback in finalizing policies for the betterment of Louisiana’s schoolchildren,” White says.
