The news seems grim for Mike the Tiger.
LSU announced this morning that Mike VI’s cancer has spread, and the university will hold a 10:30 a.m. press conference today to further discuss the beloved live mascot’s prognosis.
A CT scan and physical exam conducted on Monday at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine revealed the tumor in Mike’s face has resumed growth and the cancer has spread, LSU says.
Mike VI was diagnosed in May with a rare cancer called spindle cell sarcoma, a malignant tumor derived from fibrous connective tissues of the bone. The tumor is located in Mike’s face near his nose. There is no cure, but Mike has been receiving treatment to extend his life.
When initially diagnosed and treated, LSU said the radiation-resistant cells remaining in the tumor would resume growth at some point. LSU has said that Mike could live upwards of two years with treatment, but would not live beyond two months without treatment.
