Baton Rouge-based Amedisys is facing a potential loss ranging from $6.5 million to $38.8 million due to alleged Medicare overpayments in Florida, the company announced today in SEC filings.
Palmetto GBA, a Medicare administrative contractor, sent a request for repayment to Amedisys related to Infinity Home Care of Lakeland and Infinity Home Care of Palmetto. The overpayments were allegedly made between Jan. 2, 2014, and Sept. 13, 2016, and between Jan. 2, 2015, and Dec. 9, 2016.
Amedisys is disputing the merits of the claims. The company says it repaid a portion of the claims after a self-audit, but doesn’t think the payments were included in the company’s findings. Amedisys acquired the Lakeland Care Centers and the Pinellas Care Center in December 2015.
In the same filing, Amedisys says it is closing four Florida home health care centers and consolidating three others with care centers servicing the same markets. The move is being implemented as part of Amedisys’ plan to restructure its home health segment.
The actions are expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of this year.
