While a relatively small share of workers say they are satisfied with their pay and opportunities for promotion, most are highly satisfied with their relationship with their supervisors.
According to a Pew Research Center survey, 55% of workers say their manager is either excellent or very good to work for, with about half rating their boss highly on leadership dimensions such as giving employees flexibility to balance work and personal life and staying calm under pressure. Majorities also describe their boss as capable, confident and fair, the survey adds.
Some of the most common behaviors employees cite from their bosses include giving them flexibility to balance work and personal life (63%), giving employees credit when it’s due (56%), and staying calm under pressure (56%).
Workers with upper incomes are also more likely than those with middle and lower incomes to say their bosses are excellent or very good across several leadership dimensions.
The assessment of a boss’s effectiveness does not vary based on their gender, with most workers indicating no preference in a male or female supervisor. But workers with a supervisor who is a woman are somewhat more likely than those whose supervisor is a man to say their boss is excellent or very good at giving employees credit (59% compared to 54%).
