Former U.S. Rep. Cleo Fields is challenging Gov. Bobby Jindal’s plan for the Board of Regents to study merging the University of New Orleans and Southern University at New Orleans on the grounds that the board lacks racial diversity. While Jindal has a reasonably good chance of prevailing, John Maginnis says, the governor needs to appoint blacks to high-profile boards and commissions. “The governor has every right to hire or appoint the most qualified candidates who also support his agenda. But, in the case of Regents, he should be able to get what he wants from the board without stocking it only with white cheerleaders,” says Maginnis. Read the full column here.
