Architectural Digest this month visits Brad Pitt in the Lower Ninth Ward. The star of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is building sustainable homes for individuals and families displaced by Hurricane Katrina through his Make It Right Foundation. The story tells how Pitt brought together designers from around the world to design the perfect home for $150,000. Each is eight feet off the ground and has a hatch in the roof in the event of catastrophic floods. They also utilize geothermal energy for heat and solar roof panels that provide each house with at least 75% of their electricity. Materials and equipment are required to meet the strictest environmental standards. The foundation, which has $30 million in contributions, has finished six houses and has plans for 144 more. “We’ve cracked something here,” Pitt tells the magazine. “These houses are light and airy. They redefine affordable housing. This is a proving ground for a bigger idea that could work globally.” To read the full story, click here. Free registration is required.
