As he continues to work to stave off potentially massive budget cuts to higher education at home, LSU President F. King Alexander also is pressing lawmakers at the nation’s capital to ensure college is affordable for all who wish to attend.
Alexander was set to begin testifying before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) at 10 a.m. Eastern time at the “Reauthorizing the Higher Education Act: Ensuring College Affordability” hearing.
The hearing, which is to include testimony from Alexander and other higher education experts, will examine ways in which the federal government may help with or influence college affordability. Specifically, they want to look at ways to better manage students’ debt and explore ideas that examine the role of states. A livestream of the hearing is available online.
Alexander long has been an advocate for higher education affordability and has been a frequent visitor to the nation’s capital and the White House to share his expertise.
As Daily Report noted last fall, Alexander received a standing ovation from colleagues last October while in Washington, D.C., for his remarks about the disparities between private and public universities with respect to what they charge students and what they deliver. His comments came at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ annual President to Presidents luncheon, where Alexander was the keynote speaker.
In January last year, Alexander also told Daily Report about a fruitful visit he had at the White House as part of a summit on higher education, where he was one of just 100 business leaders, philanthropists and higher education officials invited to participate.
