In an effort to ensure safety at sporting events, LSU is instituting a clear bag policy for all athletic events during the 2016-17 academic year.

In a statement, LSU Police Capt. Marshall Waters says the practice of only permitting clear bags into sports venues is becoming more commonplace.

“Providing a safe environment for those in attendance at LSU Athletic events is our top priority,” Waters says. “Safety and security practices are constantly evolving and the clear bag policy is becoming the standard in spectator sport venues.”

Only clear tote bags smaller than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches or one-gallon plastic freezer bags will be allowed in Tiger Stadium and other athletic venues on LSU’s campus.

Backpacks and anything larger than the specific dimensions are prohibited, the university says. Small handheld clutch purses are still allowed into LSU athletic events. Exceptions also can be made for diaper bags—with a baby—and bags that are needed to hold medications.

LSU President F. King Alexander says the policy is consistent with that of the NFL.

The university will launch a month-long social media campaign on Aug. 1 to educate its sports fans on the policy. It also is planning a clear bag giveaway at Fan Day on Aug. 14.
