Scientists at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and LSU AgCenter have developed a milk-based meal replacement drink that could help people lose weight.

The powdered drink mix—available in chocolate and vanilla—is the first in a series of products the AgCenter Food Incubator and Pennington hope to jointly develop.

Studies show consuming meal replacement shakes in lieu of meals for 12 weeks is an effective, safe way to lose weight, Frank Greenway, a Pennington Biomedical professor working on the project, says in a statement. Milk can be a basis for that kind of dieting.

The AgCenter and Pennington’s shake is made from a2 Milk, which contains a protein that makes it easier to digest for people who can’t drink regular milk due to digestive issues.

The team plans to offer the meal replacement drink to participants of upcoming Pennington Biomedical clinical trials focused on obesity and ailments such as diabetes—major problems in Louisiana.

Commercialization of the product is being explored, the AgCenter says.
