More than 440 workers in Gramercy could be laid off from the Noranda alumina plant if several dominoes don’t fall the company’s way, and another 140 employees from three other businesses will be laid off in the coming months, the Louisiana Workforce Commission announced today.

Noranda says a tax dispute with Jamaica and a decrease in orders because of problems from another Noranda facility have hurt the company, and a decision will be made in the next eight weeks. The company plans for the plant’s closure to be only temporary, but would still lay off the 444 workers beginning March 13.

On March 14, Noble Drilling will begin laying off between 100 and 120 employees because of the anticipated shutdown of the Noble Danny Adkins offshore rig. While the rig reports to offices in Sugar Land, Texas, the crew change occurs in Galliano, an LWC news release says.

Trinity Marine Products Inc. says the final dozen employees in its Madisonville plant will be laid off by March 31, after 324 employees have quit or been laid off since October.
