Louisiana uses more energy per capita than any other state in the U.S., driven largely by the state’s industrial sector, new federal data show.
The 2015 figures show Texas consumed the largest amount of energy—comprising 13% of the country’s entire energy consumption—according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration report. Louisiana ranked No. 3 in total consumption, behind California. But Louisiana’s relatively small population set it atop the list for energy consumers per person.
The Bayou State’s energy consumption is driven largely by the oil and gas industry, the report says. Almost 70% of the state’s energy use came from industrial uses, while 16% came from transportation.
Louisiana, Florida, and Illinois round out the top five energy-consuming states, and together they account for more than 33% of total U.S. total energy use. Total energy consumption by the top 10 states exceeded the combined energy use of the other 41 states, including the District of Columbia. New York uses less energy per person than any other state, the report says.
