Despite losing 200 jobs in August, Louisiana has gained 1,700 construction jobs since August 2010 and ranks 18th nationally for construction employment, according to the latest report by the Associated General Contractors of America. Across the country, however, construction employment remains mixed as the lagging housing industry and fragile economy continue to take a toll on one of the hardest-hit professions during the recession. A relatively even divide between gainers and losers reflects ongoing weak demand for construction services, which has been contributing to flat employment levels for much of the past year, association officials note. “There is no clear pattern of improvement in construction employment, although the industry is no longer in free fall,” says Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist.
