New private sector employment figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show Louisiana gained roughly 1,200 jobs in the third quarter of last year.

The figures, released Monday, show five of 11 industry sectors posted job gains during the quarter: leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, wholesale trade, information, and education and health services.

The six sectors to see job losses were financial activities, construction, manufacturing, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, and other services.

From June to September 2017, gross job gains at private sector Louisiana businesses totaled 97,543, while gross job losses numbered 96,361. The addition of 1,182 jobs marked a reversal from the second quarter of last year when gross job losses exceeded gross job gains by 5,225.

The BLS figures come on the heels of a recent report from the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis that showed Louisiana posted the worst economic performance among the 50 states in 2017 and was one of only three states where the economy shrank.
