When it comes to passing a budget before the end of a regular legislative session, Louisiana lawmakers apparently were not alone.
As Governing reports, a whopping 11 states started their current fiscal years without a signed budget. Another 10 missed their initial deadline and had to call a special session to approve a spending plan.
Louisiana falls into the latter category, with lawmakers failing to pass a spending plan during their regular session. Gov. John Bel Edwards called a special session immediately afterward, where legislators passed the state budget.
Governing cites the increasing number of split-power statehouses as one of the culprits of the late budgets.
“I have never seen it this widespread,” Donald Boyd, director of fiscal studies with the Rockefeller Institute of Government, told Governing.
