Office of Motor Vehicles locations around Louisiana are unable to process transactions this morning because of a fire at the state police data center.
State police spokesman Maj. Doug Cain tells The Associated Press the data center fire this morning has shut down all automated systems at the Department of Public Safety, which includes the motor vehicles offices.
Cain says the problem doesn’t affect state police patrol operations, but means the state police can’t process handgun permits and fingerprint background checks, for example. The most obvious problem for the public will be at OMV locations.
Cain says workers are staying onsite at the motor vehicles offices, but currently all they can do is turn people away. He says a vendor is heading to the data center in Baton Rouge this morning to determine how long repairs will take.
