A national group calling for reforms to civil liability laws has once again labeled Louisiana a “Judicial Hellhole.”

The American Tort Reform Association ranks Louisiana as the eighth worst “Judicial Hellhole” in America, noting that Gov. John Bel Edwards is a “former trial lawyer.”

The foundation’s 2017-2018 Judicial Hellholes report names Louisiana courts as among the nation’s “most unfair” in the handling of civil litigation.

“Rounding out the latest Hellholes list is No. 8 Louisiana, where a former trial lawyer turned governor cheer leads litigation against the Pelican State’s critical energy industry and has hired rich political donors to run it,” says ATRA President Tiger Joyce. “Ethically challenged judges and seemingly bogus ADA lawsuits make things worse.”

Louisiana has made a consistent appearance on the annual list. The Edwards administration has dismissed the criticism in the past, calling the ranking “fiction.”
