Despite his signature tax proposal flaming out during the legislative session, his contentious relationship with Attorney General Jeff Landry and never ending budget battles—all in a state that leans heavily Republican—Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards still enjoys a favorable approval rating from Louisiana voters more than a year and a half into his term.
According to the latest Morning Consult Governor Approval Rankings, 58% of Louisianans approve of Edwards’ job performance, while 29% said they disapprove. A smaller percentage of Louisianans—14%—said they’re either unsure or have no opinion about how well the governor is doing.
Morning Consult’s annual ranking of America’s least and most popular governors is based on a survey of 195,704 registered voters conducted between April 1 and July 10. Edwards’ approval rating places him among the country’s 20 most popular governors.
Republican Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts is at the top of the list, with a 71% favorable rating. Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey is the nation’s least popular governor, with a 69% disapproval rating.
