Tim Breaux, Louisiana’s new Republican Party deputy chairman from Lafayette, says Donald Trump’s coarse comments about women in an 11-year-old video are the antithesis of the man he knows as the Republican nominee for president.
“The Trump I know is a dedicated husband, father and honest businessman,” Breaux, who Trump named as his Louisiana state campaign co-chairman early this year, tells the USA Today Network of Louisiana. “That’s what I’ve seen. At no time have I heard him speak like that.”
Breaux says most of his conversations with Trump have been about football and bringing businesses to Louisiana.
Breaux, a developer who has worked with the Trump family before on business ventures, also dismissed polls that show Trump trailing Democrat Hillary Clinton.
He believes a silent majority stand behind Trump.
“I still feel very good,” Breaux says. “He has a solid majority of the unspoken.”
Because Trump is a lock to win Louisiana, Breaux says the Louisiana GOP is putting boots on the ground in the battleground state of Florida.
“We have volunteers from Louisiana who will walk the neighborhoods between Pensacola and Panama City,” Breaux says.
