Three state agencies say nobody should eat fish or crawfish from the Devil’s Swamp and Bayou Baton Rouge area of East Baton Rouge Parish.

The Associated Press reports the departments of Health and Hospitals, Environmental Quality, and Wildlife and Fisheries also say people should avoid swimming, boating and other water activities in those areas.

An advisory sent out Wednesday says unacceptable levels of mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls were found in some fish and crawfish from the area.

The advisory replaces one in effect since 1993, warning against eating fish from the area more than twice a month.
