James Llorens, an assistant chief administrative officer for Mayor Kip Holden, was named chancellor of Southern University’s Baton Rouge campus today. Llorens has been with the city-parish since January 2009. Before that, he was with Southern for 20 years, serving a variety of roles including dean of graduate studies, chair of the political science department and chair of the department of public administration. This was Llorens’ second try at becoming Southern’s chancellor; he was a semifinalist for the job in 2008. That job ultimately went to Kofi Lomotey, who is leaving June 30. Llorens is still negotiating a contract with Southern, so his start date as chancellor has not yet been set. City-parish officials say it hasn’t been determined when Llorens will leave. Holden applauded Southern’s decision to hire Llorens as chancellor but says he will be missed at city hall.
