At its regular meeting Thursday, the Library Board of Control will discuss and formalize a resolution thanking the Metro Council for shaving more than $1.4 million in sales tax costs off the Goodwood Main Library. Library System Assistant Director Mary Stein says the council revisited and adjusted the low bid on the Goodwood branch in September. “They backed out the sales tax because they can do that,” she says. “It’s a wonderful thing.” The Metro Council has the authority to omit paying sales taxes on materials for municipal projects. The action lowers the cost of the library project to $35,410,074. Stein says the move frees up $1,359,926 in tax money for the library system to devote to other projects as needed. A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Goodwood Main Library is set for 2 p.m. today behind the existing main branch at 7711 Goodwood Blvd. The Library Board of Control will convene at 4 p.m. Thursday at 6201 Florida Blvd. in the BREC administration boardroom. —Ian McGibboney
