Part of the Mississippi River levee downtown will be reopened to the public Saturday, after having been closed for nearly a month. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to walk or ride on the levee north of the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino. The levee was closed to the public on May 13 because of the high water level of the Mississippi River. The ban allowed crews from the city-parish Department of Public Works to strengthen the levee and watch out for leaks. Jim Ferguson, the city-parish drainage engineer, says the portion of the levee between the Belle and LSU should reopen sometime next week, after DPW crews finish removing all the sandbags and water-filled “tiger dams” placed on the levee.
