If you’re looking for a new job—or just a fresh start—and want to live somewhere similar to Baton Rouge, then you should probably move to New Orleans, according to The New York Times.
Using 2017 job posting data from the employment search engine Indeed.com, The Times created an interactive online tool to help you find the U.S. city most like your hometown. Job mix—which reflects local advantages, history and local demand—is one reliable measure for determining how similar two cities are, The Times says.
On a 100-point scale, where zero is the non-overlapping distributions of job postings and 100 being identical posting, the similarity between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is 79.
The two cities have a similar mix of job postings for nurse technicians, crane operators and administrative coordinators. Proximity may be a factor in why the cities are so alike.
The Times found that often the highest-similarity pairings are cities that are nearby or even in the same state like Los Angeles and San Diego, Miami and Orlando, and New York and Boston. And while large cities are likely to have a far-away pairing, midsize and smaller metros tend to look more like their neighbors, according to the report.
