LAFAYETTE [AP] — According to federal court filings, a Lafayette man is charged with accepting or attempting to accept about $144,000 in kickbacks while working as a government contractor in Iraq.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges Jeff Thompson received the money for recommendations he made over the awarding of bids for subcontractor work. The charge, filed Tuesday, stems from recommendations Thompson made as a field supervisor for Environmental Chemical Corp., a company hired by the U.S. Air Force to build schools, hospitals, military bases and police stations in Iraq, according to the filing.

Thompson worked on four construction jobs in Iraq from March 2004 until January 2006.
