The U.S. Labor Department has awarded $1,037,807 to the East Baton Rouge Parish Housing Authority to support YouthBuild, an alternative education program that gives people age 16 to 24 training and experience for “in-demand industry careers” while earning a high school diploma or GED. Participants often have been in the juvenile justice system, have aged out of foster care or “are otherwise at risk of failing to reach key educational milestones and opportunities that lead to career fulfillment,” the department’s announcement says. The department says it awarded a total of $75.8 million for 76 YouthBuild programs nationwide.
