Louisiana ranks 35th in a new report that evaluates states based on their residents’ freedom from government regulations. Louisiana moved up four spots in the rankings from two years ago, compiled by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. The report looks at factors such as government spending, taxes, regulatory policy and “paternalism,” which covers everything from gun control regulations to drug laws. The report notes Louisiana is hurt by high sales taxes, tough marijuana laws and the liability system. New Hampshire was ranked as the freest state, while New York finished last. Louisiana was the lowest-ranking former Confederate state. See the full report here.
