The value of Louisiana exports topped $15 billion in the first quarter, a new record for the state. That’s a nearly 48% increase over the same period from a year ago, according to the World Trade Center of New Orleans, which compiled the report. The state’s surge was caused by petroleum and coal products, which saw their value increase by nearly 104% to $4.28 billion, thanks to higher crude oil prices. Agricultural products constituted the biggest export sector, up 42% to $5.8 billion. Jerry Hingle, executive director of the New Orleans-based Southern U.S. Trade Association, says the exports of bulk commodities such as soybeans, grain and wheat through Louisiana’s ports was up by 50%. Overall, U.S. exports rose 18% in the quarter. Louisiana’s performance vaulted the state to No. 4 overall in terms of export value, behind Texas, California and New York.
