The number of people who filed for personal bankruptcy in Louisiana during 2010 was up 2.2% compared with the year before, far lower than the national average. Nationally, bankruptcies were up 9%, according to The Wall Street Journal, reporting figures from the American Bankruptcy Institute and the National Bankruptcy Research Center. Nationally, more than 1.5 million people filed for bankruptcy in 2010, pushed to seek court protection because of high long-term unemployment and depressed home prices. Eleven states reported a decrease in the number of bankruptcies, led by Tennessee which posted a 7.2% drop. Hawaii saw the biggest increase in bankruptcies, up nearly 29%. See the full list here.
