The opening date for 1887 Café & Bakery inside the Kress at Third and Main has been pushed back from early March to May, according to Derek Fitch of Cyntreniks. Still in the permitting phase, the bakery’s architecture was recently finalized, addendums to the permits were made. Construction is set to begin in the next couple of weeks.
For the other section of the Kress building, Fitch says, “We have several folks looking at that space, but haven’t had a firm commitment from anyone.” Plans to open a Little Village Fish House fell through in November when Wayne Stabiler, one of the owners of the restaurant, realized a bakery would be next door, not a theater. Those originally interested in opening a theater couldn’t make the numbers work and be sustainable in the long-term, according to Fitch. “We’re still exercising due diligence with prospects and going through how it would work,” he says.—Rebecca Breeden
