A new affordable housing development has opened on Airline Highway in north Baton Rouge.
Louisville, Kentucky-based LDG Development has opened and begun leasing the Port Royal Apartments, a 196-unit multifamily complex at 6454 Airline Highway near Evangeline Street.
As of May 1, the property was 17% occupied and 40% leased, the firm says.

Christi Lanier-Robinson, an LDG Development spokeswoman, says four of the buildings at the complex are still under development.

Port Royal features two- and three-bedroom garden-style apartment homes that range in rent from $804 to $939. The property also has a swimming pool as well as business and community centers.

LDG, which specializes in developing affordable housing, acquired the 10.5-acre tract on Airline Highway to build the new affordable housing complex for $625,000 in December 2015.
The project was financed with HOME funds from the Louisiana Housing Corporation and tax credits. LDG also has developed Mallard Crossing on Greenwell Springs Road and the Woodcrest Apartments on Lobdell Boulevard.

Earlier this year, the firm purchased for $2 million a roughly 10-acre site at the intersection of Nicholson Drive and Gardere Lane to build the Meadows at Nicholson, a 204-unit affordable housing development.

Mayor Sharon Weston Broome and Metro Councilman LaMont Cole will join LDG officials and the Louisiana Housing Corporation in unveiling the complex on Wednesday.
