Jindal declares state of emergency over severe weather

Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared a state of emergency stemming from the effects of severe weather in south Louisiana since March 5. Tornadoes, heavy rain and flooding damaged over 100 homes, many of which remain without power, and communities still face the likelihood of more flooding, Jindal’s declaration says. The declaration extends through April 3 unless ended sooner, and authorizes the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness “to undertake any activity authorized by law which he deems necessary and appropriate in response to this declaration.” A declaration of emergency is necessary to allow state agencies to respond to requests for assistance from local governments, and to allow federal agencies and federal resources to be deployed if necessary, the declaration says.
