Woody Jenkins is expanding his community newspaper business with the launch of a new twice-monthly publication, Capital City News. Jenkins, a former state representative and conservative political activist, tells Daily Report the new, community newspaper will be similar to his existing publication, Central City News, but will focus on events, activities and small businesses in neighborhoods throughout south Baton Rouge—as well as in Central. “The area will really be south of Florida Boulevard—not so much crime or politics, but community news,” Jenkins says. “We’ll be focusing on the things that don’t get reported because it’s not the major news.” Central City News will debut Aug. 16 and will be published on the first and third Thursdays of the month, while Central City News will be published on the alternating Thursdays. For Jenkins, who lost the U.S. Senate election by a razor-thin margin to Mary Landrieu in 1996, the new venture is just the latest example of a widening circle of influence that has grown locally since his career as an elected official ended. Jenkins recently launched the breakaway East Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce, for example, and has elevated the profile of the East Baton Rouge Parish Republican Party, which he chairs. His Central City News, meanwhile, has seen its circulation increase to more than 10,000 in the past couple of years. —Stephanie Riegel
