The owners of Peak Performance Physical Therapy have acquired the Spectrum Fitness location in the Southdowns Village Shopping Center on Perkins Road from longtime owners Donnie Jarreau and Troy Archer.
The sale, which closed in mid-November, leaves Jarreau and Archer with just one remaining Spectrum Fitness club: the location at 3103 Monterrey Drive. Over the past four years, the partners have sold six other Spectrum clubs to two different physical therapy groups—four to Peak Performance and two to Morreau Physical Therapy.
“It’s coincidental that we have two different PTs that bought our gyms, but they’ve been great partners and it’s a good match,” Jarreau says. “Having a PT component enables those guys to compete more easily in the marketplace and offer more to clients than just fitness alone.”
Jarreau, who also owns the Spectrum Village Shopping Center, says the Southdowns sale was in the works for almost a year and that Peak Performance offered a deal that was too good to refuse in an increasingly competitive health club market.
“Baton Rouge has more health clubs per market than most other cities, plus we have a strong YMCA in this market,” he says. “It’s a very tough business.”
Jarreau says Peak Performance plans to make upgrades and improvements to the Southdowns location. He and Archer, meanwhile, are preparing to launch a new program at their Monterrey location to help combat childhood obesity.
The Southdowns sale, which Jarreau says was for around $700,000, does not include Gorilla Fitness, a cross-training facility adjacent to Spectrum that Archer owns, or the nearby Pilates Plus studio. —Stephanie Riegel
