State Rep. Michael Jackson of Baton Rouge has returned to the Democratic Party after spending the last three years as an independent, and he’s planning to run for the state Senate. Jackson, who is term-limited in the House, plans to run for the Senate District 14 seat, which is currently represented by Sen. Yvonne Dorsey. Jackson, who was interviewed on the Jim Engster Show on WRKF today, says he changed back to the Democratic Party about a month ago. “I’m more closely aligned with Democratic principles,” Jackson says. Jackson left the Democratic Party in the fall of 2008 to make an unsuccessful run for Congress. He brushed off comments that his entry in the race as an independent turned the seat over from Democratic incumbent Don Cazayoux to Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy. “We ran the race to talk about the issues,” Jackson says. —Timothy Boone
