State emergency officials say Hurricane Isaac damaged nearly 59,000 homes across southeast Louisiana, including roughly 1,100 in each of East Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes, and 2,450 in Livingston. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness outlined the latest damage estimates this afternoon, which were more than four times higher than the preliminary figures released earlier this month. The most severe damage was to houses and rental units in St. John the Baptist and Plaquemines parishes, where flooding inundated some homes with several feet of water. Meanwhile, East Baton Rouge Parish officials say they expect the contractor picking up debris from the storm to begin making a second pass through the parish on Monday. Crews from the contractor, DRC, are working seven days a week to collect storm debris, officials say, adding it’s possible that all streets in the parish may not yet have received a first pass to date. The second and final pass is intended to remove all remaining storm debris left by Isaac. You can get complete details on debris pickup in the parish and track the progress here.
