Initial claims for unemployment compensation in Louisiana fell 19.4% last week. The state Workforce Commission figures follow the previous week when about 1,100 claims hit the rolls because of the shuttering of the Pilgrim’s Pride chicken processing plant in Farmerville. With state help, Foster Farms is buying the plant, plans to open in mid-July and have 1,100 on the payroll by September. The closure cost 1,300 jobs. For the week ending May 16, there were 4,458 new claims for jobless benefits in the state. That’s down from 5,531 the previous week—but still much higher than the 2,614 filed for the week ending May 17, 2008.
