LOW FLYING
I think we need more flights to choose from and more airlines (“Aiming high: The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport’s new chairman has lofty goals for Capital Region air travel, Feb. 3). I prefer flying out of BTR, but my wife prefers flying out of MSY because of JetBlue. I do agree that by the time you finish driving there and the higher price of parking at MSY, savings are diminished, but there are more direct flights and more flight options. That is what needs to be addressed.

I travel every week. I drive to New Orleans for one reason: At BTR, there are two agents checking people in, and then one runs up the stairwell to be the gate boarding agent. It is worse than going to Walmart. I would suggest that this new chairman go undercover and observe the entire check in process as well as improve baggage claim wait.

It’s absurd that to get to Atlanta one has to go to Dallas and catch a connector flight. It’s the mark of a second- or third-class city.

POLICE PROTECTION
The area under consideration should extend to 22nd Street instead of 19th Street (“BRPD planning to double the number of officers at downtown precinct,” Daily Report, Feb. 9). That would add considerable police coverage to an area of Mid City that could definitely use the security.

SHUTTING THE DOORS
It’s not just the “inner city” that’s affected (“Community, political leaders call press conference to discuss BR General Mid City ER closure,” Daily Report, Feb. 9). Everyone living above I-10/I-12 is at risk.

This is unconscionable. Makes me sick to my stomach. You can’t have an entire half of a major U.S. city without a hospital.

While I think it’s unfortunate that it is closing, we need to look at the cause for the closure. The CEO of the General Mid City said that only 17% of the people treated in the emergence room were actually emergencies. If we correct this problem, then maybe they will be able to stay open.
