UP IN THE AIR

It is embarrassing to have clients, customers and family fly into Baton Rouge and have to wait longer for their checked bags to arrive than the wait time at LAX (“Baton Rouge airport trying to lure more corporate travelers as a way to attract more flights,” Daily Report, June 25). There are some basics to be attended to before BTR tries to aim high.

Mike Perry, via Facebook

I do not use Baton Rouge airport for one reason: I cannot go where I need to go nonstop. It’s not about price for me. It’s about convenience. I fly out of BTR once in awhile and that’s only because I am headed to Houston to catch an international flight.

While it’s much more convenient for me to fly out of BTR instead of MSY, usually business flights out of BTR are a major ordeal. I’ve yet to have one actually leave within 45 minutes of its schedule departure time, which puts me in a bind to hit connections in other airports or to get to clients’ offices at predictable times. Because of this, I have to endure the inconvenience of departing the day before, which is at least half a day of productivity lost.

THE RICHEST GET RICHER

I have to ask why we need to subsidize one of the richest people in the USA to lure the event back anyway (“City-parish contract fails to require Miss USA global broadcast,” Daily Report, June 30? Who really benefits from this subsidy, and is this just another case of the rich getting richer off of tax funds? So people see Baton Rouge on television and the next day they remember seeing a bunch of beautiful women on television, and do not even remember the contest was held in Baton Rouge—and some TIF motels keep a lot of the local tax funds anyway. That does not sound like tax funds being well spent to me.
