IBM, in conjunction with the national nonprofit Corporate America Supports You, has expanded a free nationwide training initiative to Louisiana to help veterans translate their military experience into “new collar” careers.

The Veteran Employment Accelerator program trains veterans in the use of IBM software used by law enforcement, cybersecurity, national security agencies, commercial banks and insurance companies. The program aims to equip local veterans with software certification and job placement assistance in high-growth careers that require specific skills but not traditional education.

IBM says a widening gap—expected to reach 1.8 million by 2022—exists between available, qualified, cybersecurity professionals and unfilled positions.

“Programs designed to build in-demand technology skills are needed to prepare veterans for ‘new collar’ careers,” the company says in a news release.

IBM and CASY, which specializes in job placement for veterans, launched the initiative in Louisiana on Wednesday, partnering with the Louisiana National Guard Pelican Employment Network. IBM says the initiative builds on its pledge to hire 2,000 veterans nationally over the next four years.

The free week-long training and certification course incorporates IBM’s i2 Analyst’s Notebook software. Returning service members are offered access to hands-on training, certification and job placement assistance via the program.

“Our veterans, who fought bravely for our country, cultivate skills in the military that are invaluable in the workplace,” Sandy Dochen, IBM citizenship manager for Louisiana, says in a prepared statement. “IBM recognizes the importance of public-private collaboration in shaping fast paths for service members to gain skills necessary for the 21st century economy.”
